Is the Sarnia-Lambton Market Slowing Down? Here's What July's Numbers Actually Say If you've been hearing that the market has slowed down this year, you're not wrong, but the full picture is more nuanced than a single headline number can capture. We
A quick read on what the September 2, 2026 rate decision means for you.
On September 2, the Bank of Canada held its key interest rate steady at 2.25% for the seventh announcement in a row. At first glance, that looks like more of the same. But Governor Tiff Macklem's comments at the press conference struck a noticeably firmer tone than we've heard from the Bank over the past year, and that shift matters more than the headline number does.
The Bank's official statement pointed to two forces behind the decision: energy prices that remain high because of the ongoing Middle East conflict, and fresh trade tension with the United States after talks between the two countries broke down. In the Bank's own words, "both situations remain fluid."
Canada's economy, for its part, has held up better than expected. GDP rebounded at an annualized rate of 3.3% in the second quarter, and the job market has stayed resilient through months of trade uncertainty.
For now, nothing changes in your monthly numbers. If you have a variable-rate mortgage or line of credit, your payment stays exactly where it is. If you're on a fixed rate, this announcement doesn't touch you until renewal.
The next scheduled announcement is October 28, 2026. Under normal circumstances, that would be the end of the story until then. This time it isn't quite that simple, because of how Macklem framed the risks ahead.
A few things are working in Canadians' favour right now:
The less comfortable side of the picture is inflation. Canada's annual inflation rate has climbed to 3%, a full point above the Bank's 2% target, driven largely by oil prices that have stayed elevated because of the conflict involving Iran. Brent crude has been trading closer to $90 a barrel, well above the $75 the Bank had assumed for the third quarter — and the longer that stays elevated, the more it risks spreading into the price of other goods and services.
Macklem was direct about where that leaves the Bank: "we are prepared to raise interest rates," he said, adding that more than one increase is on the table if inflation doesn't cooperate. That's a real change from his tone earlier this year, when he consistently described the risks to inflation and to growth as roughly balanced. The Bank also quietly dropped a line from its statement that used to say the current rate was exactly where it needed to be — a small wording change that bond markets read as significant. Within hours of the announcement, money markets had started pricing in the possibility of a rate increase before the end of the year.
Add to that a fresh round of tariffs — the U.S. applied duties to roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods, and Canada's countermeasures are set to begin September 8 — and there's more moving in the background than the "steady as she goes" headline suggests.
If you already have a mortgage, today's hold doesn't change anything right now, but it's a good moment to check in on your renewal timeline rather than wait for the next announcement. If you're thinking about buying or selling, a stable rate environment is still a good environment to plan in — but the more hawkish tone out of the Bank is worth factoring into your timeline if your plans depend on rates moving in a particular direction.
As always, we're happy to talk through what this means for your specific situation — whether that's your mortgage, your next move, or just making sense of the headlines.
